Which of These 7 Home Design Styles Best Fits You?

Before you get too far in the design process of your spectacular home remodeling project, it’s a great idea to figure out what interior design style you want to showcase.

The home design style you choose needs to complement the architectural style of your home as you consider home remodeling ideas.

We recommend choosing a home design and decorating style that mesh well with your lifestyle and taste.

To help you get started with choosing the right home decor for your home renovation or remodel, let’s do a rundown of some of the most popular design styles today.

1. Minimalist

This home design style is about a minimalist lifestyle with the philosophy that “less is more.” Minimalists eschew clutter and excessive amounts of possessions, favoring several cherished pieces that follow clean lines and are functional.

Minimalism isn’t equivalent to “cheap.” It is about minimizing waste and creating value in the space by only selecting purposeful, useful things. Rooms should be open and airy.

Furniture generally has exposed legs. Hidden storage is quite a must unless you plan to pare down your possessions dramatically.

2. Luxury

Luxury design involves customized everything. If a piece or accent isn’t customized, it should be a luxury brand. Furniture, fabrics, finishes, window treatments, artwork, cabinets, and more are personalized and high-end specifically for the client.

Any home design style can be upgraded to luxury interior design by an experienced designer. The key is a high level of attention to every detail and the cohesiveness of the space. The design should also continue cohesively throughout the home.

3. Traditional

Traditional homes cover a long swath of interior design history and don’t commit themselves to a particular time period in American history.

Most people feel very comfortable around traditional furnishings and home decor because of the warm, inviting feel it stirs up.

The classic colors and beautiful gingham, florals, and chintz fabrics pair harmoniously with antique heirlooms and tapestries.

Rich in both elegance and comfort, traditional design mixes a variety of styles and finds, tying it all together with symmetry.

Historic pieces full of character and charm look right at home with fancy wood molding. Sleek, modern pieces would look quite out of place here.

4. Modern

A modern home generally has clean, sleek lines, and a simple color palette. For modern style, think neutral walls, solid colors, and geometric patterns (used sparingly for accents).

Windows may be undressed for allowing plenty of natural light into the space. The predominant materials and finishes are often glass and metal. Although, flushed cabinets with invisible pulls are best.

Simplicity without a lot of clutter defines this style. Modern design began in the early to mid 20th century and continues through today. It remains extremely popular because of the fantastic balance between form and function.

Modern and contemporary are often used interchangeably. But a contemporary style is more fluid, bursting from today’s sensibilities. Contemporary style may feature curving lines but modern style does not.

5. Shabby Chic

Shabby chic embraces a mix of vintage and new decor along with feminine touches. It is a combination of modern and worn pieces that create a welcoming atmosphere. Chipped paint and distressed dressers are a treasure in this home style.

As for fabrics, cotton and linen are the favorites. Add a few throw pillows in feminine, floral patterns.

Rachel Ashwell made Shabby Chic popular in the late 1980s with her unique slipcovers that people could use to update flea market finds.

6. Rustic vogue

This popular, more masculine style combines modern beauty with character-infused old reclaimed wood beams, large wood rafters, and beautiful wide-plank wood floors.

Natural finishes like wood, stone, brick, and clay offer comfort with a mix of rough and comfortable, setting people at ease.

Metals are rusty or matte, not shiny and new. The reclaimed wood showcases lots of grain, creating a balance between the more modern features.

7. Industrial

Industrial home design style draws inspiration from warehouses, factories, urban lofts, and even commercial kitchens.

When people began to convert old commercial properties into apartments, designers embraced the industrial feel of those old buildings.

Today, many people enjoy this home design even if they live in new custom homes far from any urban district.

Furniture is generally modern, linear, and above all, functional. This style is a rather no-frills affair. Black metal and steel frequently provide the only metal in the space.

The industrial style often involves high ceilings, hanging light fixtures, exposed old brick, large walls of windows.

Exposed ductwork, old beams, concrete, and wide old hardwood floors create a stunning effect and ambiance. Generally, these spaces are open-concept.
