Southern Porch Perfection

Southern Porch Perfection

This client envisioned a warm, welcoming home centered around an open kitchen and entertaining family and friends.

When Tony and Tracy visited the Southern Living 2024 Idea House, they fell in love with the screened porch, which was adorned with a cathedral ceiling and a brick fireplace. This would be the perfect spot to listen to crickets and sip sweet tea on a Southern evening, host a football watch party, or light a fire and listen to Christmas tunes during a winter day.

Tony and Tracy reached out to Phase One when looking for a contractor, and from the first meeting, our team knew that they would be a dream client! After the Construction Consult, we transferred the project to our architectural designer, Claire. Claire helped the clients design the footprint and architecture of the new space. She figured out how to tie in the new porch with the existing porch, access to the new outdoor space, and incorporating the roofline with the current structure. In the kitchen, she added a new set of quad French doors expand natural light and provide access, and removed and relocated the window from a room upstairs to allow room for the roof pitch.

Once Claire completed architectural designs, Jon and Azalea Building Group got to work building the new addition. Grace Hill Designs from Minnesota helped with selections and furniture design. The porch features a striking cathedral ceiling, with painted v-groove, and Azek Heritage decking. A grilling station right off of the kitchen is the perfect space to cook for family or a casual Saturday night. Since we screened in the porch, we added a robust and powerful vent hood over the grill to aid smoke removal. In the center of the back wall of the porch, a brick fireplace provides the perfect amount of cozy warmth for those chilly autumn and winter days. Outside, we incorporated white band boards to hide the foundation, extensive trim work matching the home, and a decorative metal roof.

Lastly, we would be remiss to not mention the help of construction worker Tucker, a tiny dachshund who our superintendent, Jon, became fast friends with during the project. Tucker provides sassy barks warning of the scary dump trucks, distractions from the grueling summer heat, and an exceeding level of cuteness.

“It’s hard to describe in words the joy Tracy and I have already experienced from this beautiful new addition.

We never imagined that you could have taken the inspiration photo from the Kiawah home and build something even more beautiful in Lexington.

Tracy and I cannot thank you and the entire team at Phase One enough for what you have created for our family.

You have created more than just a room.. you have created a lifetime of memories which is something you simply cannot put a price tag on.”
