Artist’s Outpost

In addition to being highly functional, the Accessory Dwelling Unit exudes mid-century architectural charm.

This client loved their Rosewood home, but needed additional space. We thoughtfully combined all of the spaces on the client’s wishlist into an ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit) in their yard.

Our designer, Claire, positioned the structure to accommodate a portion of the yard that held the client’s ornamental garden and fenced area for the dogs. Claire also had to ensure that the building did not overlap with the easement for the powerline, and planned for space for a driveway.

Claire designed the ADU to facilitate multiple functions. The main living area includes an art studio for pottery, and an open living space with a kitchenette. An attached garage anchors the space. In addition to being highly functional, the ADU exudes mid-century architectural charm. The client envisioned a Sawtooth roof for visual appeal. Large windows let in lots of light for the art studio. A Murphy bed provides space for guests, but saves room for multipurpose uses. Claire also incorporated a kitchenette and enough clearance for a ping pong table for entertaining.

Material highlights of the space include the industrial concreted stained floors, and green siding. While the main house is brick., the siding choice helps the ADU blend naturally into the greenery of the yard.

We are very happy with the work Phase One did designing our backyard building with garage, art studio, multipurpose room, bathroom, and kitchenette. Claire, CJ, and Pam listened carefully to our needs and vision and helped us vet our options with excellent feedback and drafts before we settled on the final drawings. The need for ample natural light in the studio led to a sawtooth roof design that provides light throughout the building, is visually appealing, and fits in the confined yard space we had to work with. The building is almost two years old; we enjoy it every day and there is nothing we would change.
